The strawberries are in! In place of the bedding plants we used to carry, we now have a greenhouse hung with suspended rows of white PVC pipe with strawberry pots sitting inside them. Many, many strawberry pots. These open-bottomed pots rest in a flow of nutrient-rich water that we capture at the end of the pipes and recycle.
The pots sit at about eye height, and a thin line separates the leaves of the plant from the berry stems, which hang down beneath the lines where they’re supported on a soft woven strap which supports the weight of the heavy fruits and lets us pick them at a comfortable height when they ripen.
Today, the berries are green, with just a few of them blushing to pink.
